What is the CHAMPION Study?

CHAMPION is a research study that helps men who have sex with men (MSM) track their PrEP use and reduce meth use using a mobile app. The study is fully remote and available to people in San Francisco and San Diego.

Who is conducting this study?

Researchers from the San Francisco Department of Public Health, UC San Francisco, and UC San Diego are leading this study.

What is the purpose of this study?

The study tests a mobile app to help people stay on PrEP and cut back on meth use if they choose to.

What happens if I join?

First, you’ll have a phone call to check if you are eligible for the study. If you are eligible, you’ll meet with our team, learn about the study’s risks and benefits, and sign a consent form. Then, you’ll start the study and be in it for 6 months.

How long does the study last?

Participation lasts about six months, with monthly check-ins.

Will I be compensated?

Yes! You can earn up to $230 for completing study activities.

Do I need to quit meth to join?

No, this study does not require abstinence from any substances. It focuses on providing support for people using methamphetamine and those who want to explore changes in their use.

Will I receive treatment for substance use?

While you won't receive any medication, this study offers an online version of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT4CBT). Additionally, you will have access to digital support tools such learning resources and harm reduction tips.

What is the mobile app used in this study?

The app offers PrEP support, reminders, behavioral tools, and motivational content to help participants stay engaged with their health goals.

Do I need to visit a clinic or lab for this study?

No! This study is fully remote. Everything is done through the app, online surveys, and at-home sample collection.

Do I need a certain type of phone?

No, the CHAMPION app works on both iPhone and Android. However, you do need a smart phone to participate.

Can I quit the study?

Yes! Joining is 100% your choice, and you can leave anytime.

Is my information private?

Yes, your information is kept private and secure.
